The People of the State of California vs. Cinefamily ???

It appears another Cinefamily creditor has stepped forward: former Cinefamily staff, members, contractors, distributors, and others are joined now by no less august a body than the State of California!

It seems in late 2017, as Cinefamily directors reached into their own pockets to pay for a report that allegedly exonerated them, they couldn’t find $481 they owed in taxes. This appears to have resulted in a tax lien filed against “The Silent Movie Theater Co.” [sic] The lien appears to remain open with the debt still outstanding.

Get in line, taxman!

This is not the first time Cinefamily has had tax problems. Public records filed with the California Secretary of State and the L.A. County Recorder’s Office indicate multiple state tax liens filed against Cinefamily by the state Employment Development Department. A $1,643 lien was filed on November 24, 2015, and subsequently released on January 27, 2016. A $1,647 lien was filed on November 30, 2015, and subsequently released on January 22, 2016.

It appears whoever was in charge of finances and taxes at Cinefamily didn’t do a great job. Hopefully that will be corrected at Fairfax Cinema, which will be run by the much more responsible team of… *checks notes* Cinefamily’s Treasurer and Cinefamily’s accountant.
